Greetings Quilters,As you read this newsletter, your gardens are probably calling out to
you. The early blooms are giving way to the full color of summer (and
maybe a few weeds). Our time stitching pauses to allow us to enjoy the
wonders of nature for a few, all too short months. At QT, we have
planned a light summer schedule of classes,
focusing on quick and seasonal projects. These
projects can help you stay connected with your quilting friends and give
you your fabric "fix" as well. It is always fun to have a new table
topper or sofa throw to jazz up your décor. Our class recommendations
include a beautiful and scrappy floral string quilt project called Twist
& Shout, taught by Mary Havisto. Rita will teach a new Terry Atkinson
quilt called Pinwheels and Pearls, which would look stunning in
patriotic colors. Table topper projects include the Stardance Runner,
Twisting Star and Carpenter's Wheel Table Mat. Great tote classes
include the Newport Tote, Chelsea Tote, and Purse-Nickities, all
designed by Lazy Girl, and The Quilted Totebag designed by The Quilted
Closet. The Lazy Girl totes are hot from market, and are perfect for
gift giving (or just for you!) We have included a few additional
stitching dates to catch up on projects. We will host A class highlight for us this quarter will be on Saturday, September 13 when we invite Susan Cleveland to share her Red Hot Binding technique. She will also demonstrate decorative thread applique. Her teaching style is energetic and engaging. Her quilting style is precise and artistic. Be inspired by this truly gifted teacher and quilter to go beyond the basics. Space is limited, so please call early. When you receive this newsletter, it will be just in time for the Minnesota Quilters Show in St. Paul, June 12 - 14. As we mentioned in our last newsletter, we will be vendors there and look forward to seeing you. Helen Kelley will be in our booth autographing copies of her new book, Every Quilt Tells a Story. Liz Lois from East Troy, Wisconsin will be signing her new book, Nearly Insane, based on the Salinda Rupp 1870's antique quilt. This quilt is made from 98 6-inch blocks and may well become your next scrappy obsession. View Liz's quilt in our booth and check out her book for other variations of this quilt. We'll have a Lazy Girl Trunk Show featuring several of her totes that we went wild for at quilt market in May. We'll feature many new kit items, and loads of fat quarters and coordinated bundles. Our booth will offer plenty of inspiration, including a huge variety of samples large and small. (Rita has been in design heaven making plans for this booth and she needs to be reminded that our space is not as large as the State Theater.) We will have lots going on at the shop as well, including a staff challenge display of Terry Atkinson's Pinwheels and Pearls pattern and table runners from her latest book, Spring Cleaning. We will have snacks and refreshments each night from 4:00 - 8:00 pm, and you will have plenty of room to put your feet up and visit with your quilting buddies. Be sure to check out our class listings, and post our at-a-glance calendars in a handy spot. Stop by often this summer, get out of the heat and into the cool color in the shop. Forget about the grass stains on your sneakers and the dirt under your nails --- quilters just don't worry about such things.

MISS MANNERS VISITS THE QUILT SHOP Dear Miss Manners, I recently saw a sample in a quilt store that I wanted to make. It seemed like something I could figure out, but when I began drawing the quilt on graph paper, the clerk suggested I buy the pattern. Why can't I just copy what I saw? Also, I wanted to take a class to make another quilt, and I had to purchase a pattern to take the class. Why can't the teacher just teach me how to make the quilt? After all, she already bought the pattern! Signed,
Dear Patty, The samples you see in quilt shops usually are made from patterns that are copyrighted. The designers go to great time and expense to prepare patterns and books for sale, and if you "copy" their work rather than buying their patterns, you are technically stealing. I know that sometimes ideas seem so simple that we think, "Well, I could have thought of that!" Nonetheless, if it isn't our original idea, we should respect those that have created the project and purchase their pattern. Teachers and Quilt Shops are bound by the same copyright laws, and cannot misrepresent their class work as their own if it was in fact created by someone else. The same holds true for guilds wishing to copy patterns for groups. Keep in mind, that the time you spend drawing out someone's design is time you could spend making the quilt! Dear Miss Manners, I love to take quilt classes, but I am sensitive to perfumes and fragrances. Are there any rules about using smelly stuff? Signed,
Dear Nancy, While it would be difficult to have "rules" about the use of fragrances in quilt shops or classes, here are some guidelines we hope your classmates might follow: Avoid wearing any perfume if you are planning to attend a quilt class. Classrooms are usually small and may not be well ventilated. Also avoid using fabric softeners if you pre-wash your fabrics. Just a little courtesy can avoid discomfort for those who have fragrance sensitivities. Dear Miss Manners, I like to take pictures when I go to quilt shops and sometimes the clerks seem unpleasant about this. Why can't I take pictures of the quilts I like? Signed,
Dear Andy, If you are purchasing fabric, a kit, or planning to take a class of a quilt you see in a shop, you probably are most welcome to take a picture of the sample quilt. It is always a good idea (and good manners) to get permission first. Sometimes the sample quilts belong to independent teachers or designers and the shop has permission to display it, but not necessarily to photograph it. Just to be safe, it is always best to ask permission to take pictures, and to be prepared to honor the decision. |
